Sha Wujing, also known as Sandy or Monk Sha, is a prominent character in the classic Chinese novel *Journey to the West*. He is one of the four main disciples of the Tang Monk, Tang Sanzang, on their pilgrimage to retrieve Buddhist scriptures.
Sandy's origins lie in Heaven, where he held the position of General Rolling Curtain. However, after accidentally shattering a crystal goblet, he was banished to the mortal realm and transformed into a fearsome river demon dwelling in the Flowing Sand River. This marks his first appearance as a demon, terrorizing travelers and consuming them.
Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, eventually convinces Sandy to atone for his sins by joining Tang Sanzang's pilgrimage. He is tasked with protecting the monk and aiding him on his journey to the west. Sandy is known for his loyalty, diligence, and quiet strength. He carries a monk's spade and is a skilled fighter, though often portrayed as more reserved than his fellow disciples, Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie.
After the successful completion of the journey, Sha Wujing is rewarded for his service and attains enlightenment, becoming an Arhat.
